How To Survive Thanksgiving Part 2: Post Carbapocalypse.

by joe daniels on November 23, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Posted In: carbohydrates

Ok here’s how to get your beautiful figure back after the once a year turkey and stuffing bash.

Look in the mirror.
See there’s no bumps and bruises or lacerations to your face. This means you did not fall off the wagon. So, lets stop with the pity party.

Today the scale will taunt you. You are probably 5-10 lbs heavier than you were pre Carbapocalypse. Don’t fret. Unless you ate near 35,000 calories in a day this weight is not fat.

Ok so what is it? You ask?
Your muscles are loaded with carbohydrate in the form of glycogen now. With more glycogen comes more water along with it. You are now a heavy sponge of energy. You probably had much more sodium. With more sodium there is much more water held in the body. This is one of the reasons I love to eat potatoes on thanksgiving so it will help balance the water in my body as potassium works with sodium to regulate fluid in our cells.

Also no one passes out from a turkey induced tryptophan crash. It the blood sugar elevation and drop due to super high insulin secretion that gives you the carb coma!

Ok so were super saturated with glycogen. And everyone went to bed afterwards. The muscles remain full of the carbohydrates. Think about it being the same as going to BP and filling your car with extra clicks til the gas poured out..

Welcome to today. How to get this excess weight off?

First off don’t drive down the street to Shell and fillup! Your tank is full of gas you don’t need more! So LOWER CARB DAY TODAY. Try to eat lots of fibrous veggies to keep you full without over flowing the already full cells you have. Plus the more potassium will help you feel better and less bloated, due to the excess sodium of yesterday.

Workout. Period. Burn off some of that full tank of carbs.

Drink more water so you can flush out the excess sodium.

Here is my lunch meal . pho stock and lots of veggies plus chiles and pork. Eat this way for a few days until you feel less bloated and tight in your clothes.

Take extra b vitamins and magnesium , chromium to help convert the food and carbohydrates to energy. Processed foods such as bread and cola help deplete minerals from our body.

Herbs such as gymnemma Sylvestre and bitter melon can help by enhancing insulin to lower blood sugar levels.

Depending on your level of activity, it may take one day to one week to get back to normal feeling. But remember chances are that 90% of the gained weight is not actual FAT WEIGHT..

You can relax now. You’re not 10 lbs fatter!

How to Start Eating Better. Tip 11/18/2012

by joe daniels on November 18, 2012 at 9:12 PM
Posted In: lifestyle, nutrition

My top 3 most effective food related things to do when you don’t know what to do

A giant Chard leaf can substitute for bread.

  1. Make your food or watch someone do it for you if you purchase it. With that in mind I’m not talking fast food. Crave a pizza?  Make it yourself or watch someone else make it. stop eating box pizzas and microwaveable meals all the time.
  2. Eliminate alcohol, sodas and full sugar energy drinks. This includes Gatorade etc. At least cut alcohol consumption to a couple drinks per week.
  3. Spend 3-4 weeks purchasing only foods from the perimeter of the grocery. Fruits, veggies, eggs, dairy, meat, fish, nuts. The only thing worth buying in the aisles are spices and toilet paper.

See how you feel after 1 week then one month. Stay tuned for more simple tips.

Training After Work: A Few Tips For Finding Motivation and Energy To Succeed

by joe daniels on November 10, 2012 at 11:20 PM
Posted In: lifestyle, mentality, motivation, stress

If you are super busy like most of us are, you have a full time job and usually fight traffic on you way home to take  a few of your kids to their sports.  What about training when you are tired and unmotivated to do so after the day is over?

  • First of all rule out that you are overtraining and not getting enough recuperation.
  • try to decrease caffeine intake  before later workouts as it wont allow you into deep restorative sleep after a workout late at night.
  •  I myself just take some creatine and branched chain amino acids and perhaps some rhodiola rosea  to help with concentration and adaptogen qualities without   stressing my adrenals like most stimulant based preworkouts are filled with.
  • Take a few minutes and breathe deep, focusing on what your about to go and train.
  •  Visualize your self performing the workout and  just as importantly  the outcome of that training .  you may just get superfired up..
  •  Oh and crank some Slayer or other metal in your headphones. that usually helps…….

Good Luck and Train Hard yet remember that “NEver Give Up , Never Give In”   doesnt mean push yourself to the breaking point each day.. its is a mantra to train optimally to reach your goal. listen to your body and dont give up just because you had a bad day or missed a lifting goal.
